A team of engineers in Lagos state embarked on an eye-catching tour of the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Industry in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos.
TOP MEDIA reports that the tour of the petrochemical project enabled several professional engineers to get hands-on experience.
During the tour on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, environmental engineers met with Raj Hooblal, the head of environment of Dangote Industries Limited and Devakumar Edwin, Vice President, Dangote Industries Limited.
Worth $20 billion the giant refinery built by the Dangote Group, which is owned by Africa’s richest man Aliko Dangote, produces between 25 million and 57 million litres of gasoline per day.
Chairman Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers (NIEE) Lagos State Chapter, Engr. Yusuf Majolagbe, gave the welcome address.
He said:
“650,000 barrels of crude oil being produced per day is huge. It is going to create a lot of opportunities for Nigerians, it is going to create jobs, it is going to make us have opportunities to cutting-edge technologies, and for the Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers, we want to see a future whereby our young engineers can be incorporated.”
Also on the tour was Engr. Nimot Muili, Chairperson of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) Ikeja Branch; Alhaji AbdulRahman Zubayr HSE Advisor Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Industry; Engr. Nureni Adegboyega Ogunyemi, National Chairman NIEE; Engr. Rotimi Olubowale, and Vice Chairman NSE Ikeja Branch.
Meanwhile, Hooblal informed the delegates that the refinery was established primarily to source and refine local crudes for the benefit of Nigeria, while also exporting excess production to boost the economy.
Hooblal noted that the lack of sufficient Nigerian crude supplies had necessitated importing crude from other countries and continents while exporting refined petroleum products abroad, adding that the Dangote refinery would save the country from being a dumping ground.
